功課一則-Star Ferry pier

標籤: ,

Recently, I have heard that our Star Ferry pier is going to be demolished. It is a historical building. When I was in childhood, I often took Star Ferry to cross the harbour. The Star Ferry has given me countless happy memories. Whenever holiday comes, such as Christmas and New Years, I would take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui to watch the Christmas decoration and lighting. Now the pier is relocated, and it is really pitiful to see this happened as the Star Ferry pier is one of Hong Kong’s memorials. The historical significance of this is a clock tower with a monument, an art ware.

The Hong Kong Government only to do sea-reclamation blindly and extend extra spaces to build huge amount of constructions without doing enough urban planning. The Hong Kong Government should consider about the habour scene of Victoria Habour, but not deconstructing those historical buildings. The old Star Ferry pier now is gone and has become part of our memory, for our powerlessness to do anything, fail to make a change. Maybe Hong Kong cannot tolerate old style buildings like Star Ferry pier, and it seems to me that Hong Kongers can only rely on memory to recall all the things in mind that are worth embracing, like the Star Ferry pier. Our memory is unceasingly reconstructed, yet the society is unceasingly reconstructing our memory, it is a paradox.
